Cats spend nearly one third of their lives cleaning themselves.

Truffles, the Cat with Colorblind Glasses
Truffles the cat has spent her time learning tricks that help her teach children about glasses. Her owner, Danielle Crull, has trained her to pick out a pair of glasses to wear to show children that glasses are fun. Truffles picked up the habit easily, so when Crull learned of colorblind glasses for humans, she had an idea for Truffles.

Although some think that cats are completely colorblind, that’s only partially true; they see a range of colors that is closer to a dog’s than a human’s. In general, cats can see yellows, blues, and sometimes greens. With her knowledge as an optician, Crull was inspired to create custom colorblind glasses for Truffles to expand the range of colors she can see.

Truffles was already used to the sensation of physically wearing glasses, but when she first tried out her new colorblind glasses she seemed to look around the room seeing some things for the first time. Although there’s no way to test if Truffles is actually seeing more colors, her reaction seems to indicate that it’s possible!

DIY Ombre Cat Scratching Post
If you’re looking for a cat scratching post that’s visually appealing, give this DIY a try.

You’ll need:

  • Sisal rope (⅜” or ¼”)

  • 4x4 fence post cap

  • Pet safe fabric dye (and something to dye the rope in, like a bucket)

  • 18 inch plywood circle

  • Pom-poms, string, or something to add as a toy to the post

  • All the tools: a drill, sandpaper, screws, nails, rubber bands

Instructions:

  1. Dye the rope, making sure you separate it into multiple sections to get the ombre effect with at least 4 colors of rope. Let the dyed rope dry for 24 hours.

  2. Sand the base and screw the post into the center.

  3. Start wrapping the rope tightly around the base, securing with 3 or 4 roofing nails when starting or ending each color of rope (this will hold up much longer than glue!).

  4. Add any string or toys to the top and then add and secure the post cap.

You can further customize this by painting the base with pet friendly paint if you’d like. We hope your cat enjoys their unique ombre scratching post!

5 Things Cat and Dog Owners Have in Common
Although we may have our differences, cat and dog owners have more similarities than you might think. Here are 5 things we have in common.

  1. We greet our pets before our family. 69% of dog owners and 67% of cat owners reported saying hello to their pet first before their family. To be fair, I’m sure most of our animals run towards us a bit faster than our human family members!

  2. We give our pets nicknames. Both cat and dog owners give their pets a nickname, often multiple nicknames. Just like your cat Baxter turns into Bax, Mr. B, Bax to the Max, etc - dogs get the same nickname treatment!

  3. We like to sing to our pets. 70% of cat owners and 63% of dog owners like to give concerts to their furry friends.

  4. We let our pets take the best spot on the couch or bed. 61% of cat and dog owners say they let their pet steal the best seat, meaning we all make sacrifices for our pets.

  5. We all cuddle our pets. Both cat and dog owners spend an hour or two each day cuddling their pet. This cuddle time is beneficial for both human and animal, as it triggers the release of oxytocin for both!

We’re pretty sure both cat and dog owners also probably both spend a lot of time vacuuming and lint rolling!
